Our Humble Homebodies!
Petunia is the sweetest pig on the farm. There’s a really good chance that she’ll be your shadow when you visit, as all she wants is to be loved on. She was once an inside pig that was surrendered only because she didn’t stay a “teacup” pig (heads up- they do not exist). She is always a delight and she always makes feeding time hilarious as she springs back and forth between the bowls. We are so lucky to have her as a part of our family.
Ziggy is the star of the show, as you can probably guess by the sanctuary's name. He was adopted as a baby piglet by Kristin Hartness who was under the impression that he was a teacup pig- which don't actually exist- so suddenly, Kristin found her hands full with a 300-pound big baby pig. Ziggy left the Virgin Islands (his first home) and traveled the United States in his motorhome with his parents; Kristin Hartness and Jay Yontz, educating the public about living a compassionate lifestyle. He has successfully encouraged hundreds of his fans and supporters to embrace a vegan life, a life that excludes cruelty to Ziggy's animal friends.

Jingles is our only kunekune on the farm and boy is he precious! He was rescued from of a hoarding situation in Sampson County, NC. Now, he spends his time rooting in the mud and playing with his pig companions. He loves life and is one of the kindest souls you will ever meet. Be sure to put Ziggy's Refuge on your calendar so you can come meet Jingles and all his friends!
SPONSOR VINNIE BY CLICKING HERE!
Vinnie was discarded by a large factory farm due to the fact that he couldn't eat without vomiting- which made him impossible to fatten up. Luckily, this made him unfit to become a "meat product".
After coming to Ziggy's Refuge, he earned the name Vinnie after Vincent Van Gogh because of his missing ear. The veterinarians he met with said his ear was likely sliced off in an abusive encounter. Each week Vinnie underwent anesthesia and a life-saving stomach stretching procedure that allowed for the opening in his stomach to pass food without Vinnie regurgitating each time. Vinnie still has to drink his "mush" from a bottle 4 times a day and will for the rest of his life, but we are so excited to say 4 months after treatment he is a whopping 400 pounds and growing like crazy every day! He has a plethora of health issues, but by living at Ziggy’s Refuge he is guaranteed to live a long, happy life.

Chris fell off a transport truck and then went missing for months in the woods until one day when he showed up on a horse farm. Ziggy’s Refuge was called and immediately came to his rescue. This little boy’s bravery is what has kept him alive long enough to find his permanent home at our sanctuary. He is like a new pig now that he knows he is safe. His favorite thing to do now is cuddle, and he is possibly one of the gentlest pigs on our farm.

Coral has been through hell and back during her short life. She has had a total of five surgeries so far to correct her prolapsed rectum, which then led to a colostomy. The doctors then inserted a ring to protect an opening on the side of her belly so that she can safely pass waste- a complicated procedure that has never been done before. This tiny girl weighs 45 pounds and she is the toughest baby on the farm. She loves playing with her brother Cruz and snuggling with anybody who visits her. Coral will need quite a lot of medical attention throughout her life, but it's a challenge both she and Ziggy’s Refuge are willing to take on.
SPONSOR CORAL BY CLICKING HERE!
Cruz is Coral’s spunky brother. Both Coral and Cruz were rescued from a horrifyingly neglectful home by a sweet girl from North Carolina. However, after rescuing them, she didn’t know what to do with them! Coral was in dire need of medical attention, and Cruz wouldn’t go anywhere without Coral. So, Ziggy’s Refuge stepped in with all intentions to pay for their medical care and then rehome them to people who would treat them with all of the adoration in the world. Well, it turns out that one surgical procedure turned into five- making it impossible to rehome them without risking lack of medical care. So, Coral and Cruz became permanent residents at Ziggy’s Refuge! Cruz adores his sister, and follows her everywhere. He loves to play, and isn’t shy when it comes to meeting people. He is the perfect little pig, and we’re happy to be the place he calls home.

Toby is our only turkey resident. He was rescued by another animal rescue and then rehomed to Ziggy’s Refuge where he will now spend the rest of his life. Toby has had it tough, with at least ten surgeries under his belt to treat his bumblefoot. He has been brave for every single one, and his recovery is going great. He is unable to walk, but finds lots of joy in being rolled around in his baby stroller, and enjoys the sunshine. If you come to visit, he will be one of the first animals to welcome you!

Henny was surrendered by her former owner. She loves eating toasted oats and taking luxurious dust baths in the sun. She isn't too snuggly, but her favorite game to play with our volunteers is hide and go seek, and man is it tricky to find her! She loves spending time with her best friends Lilo and Stitch, two other rescue chickens on our farm.
SPONSOR HENNY BY CLICKING HERE!
Lilo was rejected by his mother, along with his sibling Stitch. As a result, Ziggy's Refuge raised them from chicks into adulthood- which earned them their names; Lilo and Stitch because neither one would be left behind. Lilo is the feistiest of the two, always chasing after people and seeing if he can get a reaction. He crows constantly, and will use any excuse to ruffle his feathers.
SPONSOR LILO BY CLICKING HERE!
Stitch is Lilo's brother and has earned his title as the most curious chicken on the farm. He is always following around volunteers in attempts of figuring out what it is they are doing. He loves to crow and uses every chance he has to show off his strong voice. He was rejected by his mother, which would have left him with a low chance of survival if it wasn't for Ziggy's Refuge stepping in to raise him into adulthood.

Rudy came to us with a badly broken leg. Nobody is quite sure how the injury came to be, but it definitely doesn't hold him back now. With love, physical therapy and around the clock care, he made a full recovery. Due to his injury, he has a bit of an odd gait, but he absolutely loves to run around. In fact, he'll run right across the farm if he finds out you're passing out treats!

Carole was surrendered by a woman who loved her. At one time, Carole lived with multiple other hens- but one night, a fox or coyote got into the pen and killed all but Carole. After the attack, Carole was surrendered in hopes of keeping her safe. She is extremely friendly and loves people. She is oftentimes the first hen to greet guests at the bed and breakfast! This little baby has lots of personality.

Albert and his two brothers were adopted from another rescue that houses their animals by fosters. Unfortunately, they rescued Albert, Wilbur and Oliver without having fosters lined up. Due to no fosters being available, there was no place for these pigs to go. Ziggy's Refuge stepped in and gave these babies a forever home. Here, the pigs personalities bloomed. Albert loves to snuggle, adores when fresh hay is given out, and inhales treats. He doesn't like belly rubs, but he is finally warming up to people.
SPONSOR ALBERT BY CLICKING HERE!
Wilbur is part of the Three Amigos, which is what we call him and his brothers Oliver and Albert. Wilbur is the most mischievous of the three, and he is very outgoing. He absolutley loves eating pancakes, but any treat will do. He leads by example, teaching his brothers and the other animals on the farm how to recieve love and give trust.
SPONSOR WILBUR BY CLICKING HERE!
Oliver is a bit shy when it comes to people and other animals, but we know there is a big personality hiding beneath his bashful facade. He loves to eat watermelon whenever he can and tends to be one of our more independent pigs! He is starting to become more open to the idea of trust, however. Oliver enjoys rooting around in the mud and lounging in the sun.

Neil was rescued by Ziggy's Refuge from what we believe was a dog fighting ring in Sampson County, NC. There, he had been used as bait to rile up the fighting dogs. He had gashes all over his body, and it took five surgeries to patch him back up. They surgically removed his left butt cheek to try to patch some of the wounds up. Neil, amazingly, has become the most loving, gentle, and precious little boy ever. He loves other animals and people despite his horrifyingly brutal past. This little boy gets along with everybody and wouldn't hurt a fly. We love him to pieces!

Charles fought for his life and won. This big pig was going to be roasted for a Fourth of July party, but he escaped, running as fast as he could. He wound up resting in someone's yard, who just so happened to be a vegetarian. Thank goodness, because this person knew his life had value. Ziggy's Refuge was called, and we couldn't possibly say no. Now, Charles lives a spoiled life at our sanctuary and will until his last breath. He loves eating apples and has become best friends with another one of our big pigs Sweetheart. He is a total goofball who is usually first to make volunteers laugh. This crazy sweet boy is as happy as can be!

Once upon a time, a little boy fell in love with a farm pig. This farm pig was Sweetheart. His love for this pig was so strong, it saved her from being sent to slaughter. Instead, she was brought to Ziggy's Refuge, where she bloomed into the wonderful pig she is today. The only hint of her cruel past is a number tattooed on her right ear and the fact that her tail was cut off without anesthetic or pain relief as a baby. Today, she prides herself on being a sassy girl who loves blankets, pumpkins and every volunteer that walks into her barnyard.

Reynoso is Rijoso's son. All of the horses living at Ziggy's Refuge came with the farm- their previous owners hadn't wanted them anymore. Reynoso himself is a very laid back Spanish Andalusian and was a show horse for many years of his life. This stallion loves people and loves carrots even more! Ziggy's Refuge made an effort to rehome this beautiful baby, but everybody who came forward wanted to put him back into the show world or to ride him- so no match was found. Which is just fine for Reynoso, because that means he can spend the rest of his life relaxing at Ziggy's!

Rijoso is the easiest going of all of the Ziggy's Refuge horses. He had been a show horse for his previous owners, but is now happily retired on our sanctuary and will never be asked to perform again. He used to be brown, but his fur lightened to gray due to his old age. Rijoso is approximately twenty years old! This beautiful baby loves treats and anybody willing to give them to him.

Conquistadora came with the farm purchased by Ziggy's Refuge. before calling our sanctuary home, she was a show horse. At one point in time, she was completely brown, but her fur color lightened over time and is now a beautiful gray. She is very sweet and carries herself with elegance. Her favorite thing to snack on is fresh carrots.

Ranger is the farm's one and only paint horse. He came with the farm, and is as happy as can be! He is the oldest of the horses at approximately 25 years of age but is young at heart and proves it with his mischievous demeanor. He is quick to greet newbies on the farm, but often lets El Magnifico take the lead.

Niña isn't as attention seeking as the other horses and it takes her awhile to warm up to people, but that doesn't mean she isn't full of love. She adores her son El Magnifico and spends most of her time shadowing him. This pretty girl loves carrots and acts playfully when she thinks nobody is watching.

Allie has the best luck in the world. This cow was born on a cattle rancher's farm in Nashville, Tennesee. Her fate to become a meat product was practically written in stone. However, Allie was born without eyes- making her completely blind. The farmer knew that if he raised her on his farm, she would surely drown in one of the ponds on his property. So, he called a local pig rescue that came to grab her, and for years she was the only cow at the sanctuary. Eventually, the pig rescue reached out to Ziggy's Refuge and begged them to take her. We had room and another cow already within our care, so we said yes. Allie is extremely affectionate towards human companions, always wanting to be loved on. She loves eating pancakes and pumpkins and wanders around the farm so confidently that you'd never guess she is blind!

Elvis was the first cow to live at Ziggy's Refuge. Before becoming free at Ziggy's, he belonged to a hobby cattle farmer. This farmer's lady friends fell in love with beautiful Elvis and kept saving him every time the other cows were sent to slaughter. Eventually, they realized that for Elvis to live, he would have to go to a sanctuary. That sanctuary was Ziggy's Refuge. Elvis' favorite snack is fresh hay- so much so that he moos and dances every time he sees us coming with new flakes. He loves playing with the hay just as much as eating it! Elvis is full of mischief and can be quite jealous- if he notices you giving attention to other animals, he nudges them out of the way despite not necessarily wanting the attention himself! As you can probably guess, he is quite the goofball.

Ally is one of our farm cats. She came with the farm just like the horses, though we can't possibly imagine why anybody would give up this precious, sweet baby. She is very playful and cuddly towards anyone willing to pet her. She gets along great with all of the other animals, and is best friends with Ziggy! This little kitty brings life with her wherever she goes.

Fred is our only male duck on the farm, and was rescued with his female duck pal Ethel. They were taken in by animal control first, but they didn't have a place to house ducks- so Ziggy's Refuge was called and we couldn't say no to their precious faces. Fred is very independent, he doesn't enjoy being touched but does love being around people. He is always following Ethel, determined to keep her safe.

Ethel was rescued with her best friend Fred from animal control. She is a fearless little thing, always letting her curiosity rule her actions. She doesn't like to be touched but does hang out around people so long as Fred is with her. When she was first rescued by Ziggy's Refuge, it became apparent that she was a very talented escape artist! She was always able to get out of her pen. After awhile, we threw up our hands and decided that if she wants to roam free, we should let her. So now she and Fred wander around together on the farm, checking on the other animals and hanging out by the barn.

Gracie is the smallest of the goats on our farm. She loves being picked up and is very spunky. She loves to talk to anyone who passes by the goat pen! As you can probably guess, she is the most social of all the goats.
Gracie, along with the other goats in our care were living in a neglectful situation before they came to our sanctuary. Nobody ever paid attention to them or showered them with love. We needed a sheriff's escort to get them all off their previous owner's property. All of the goats, especially Gracie, have made a complete 360 personality wise!

Comet has been coined the "King of the Goats"! He is definitely the leader of the group, as all the others look to Comet for direction. He is the biggest and only male goat on our farm, which makes it easy for him to take control during mealtime. Occasionally, he'll dance for fresh hay and if you're lucky, you'll be able to witness it!

Maxwell was rescued by the ASPCA from a kill pen. He was in terrible shape when they took him in, but they were able to slowly nurse him back to health. Of course, this lovely creature couldn't stay with them forever, so they searched high and low for a permanent home. That permanent home was Ziggy's Refuge, where they knew he'd never end up in a bad situation ever again. Maxwell fits right in at Ziggy's. If you visit, you'll probably hear him talking! He absolutely loves hugs despite being a little bit shy. He still gets nervous when going into the barn at night due to his past, but he is getting better every day!

Jordan was Ziggy's Refuge's first rescue animal! This little pig was listed on Craigslist- "$40 to fill your freezer". When we saw that listing, our hearts absolutely shattered. We couldn't imagine how his life had been reduced so much that he was seen as an object to buy and sell rather than an individual with feelings and a personality. Ziggy's Refuge stepped in as quickly as they could and offered to take him in. It took lots of conversing with his past owners due to the fact that if we were to take him, there would be no money exchanged- just a life lived happily at our sanctuary. We are happy to say that our gift of gab worked, and we were able to take him in. Jordan has major trust issues, still to this day. He came from a very neglectful past, which makes his lack of interest in people understandable. His offstandish personality has earned him the nickname "Thug Life", which always gets a chuckle out of visitors. He loves pumpkins and has become best friends with Petunia the pig, so he isn't at all lonely. Despite his grumpiness, we adore him- and he knows it. We are so thankful that this little boy knows he is safe.

Whitey was another animal that came with the farm, and oh, we're so glad he did! This lovely pup is the most affectionate, sweet, mischievous and funny dog we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is super friendly, and loves greeting new visitors whenever they come to the farm. His best friend is Toby the Turkey; he is always watching over him to make sure he is safe. He watches over all of the farm's animals, making a silent promise to protect all of his animal friends. When you meet him, be sure to offer a belly rub, they're his weakness!

Sweet Pea is the second most social of all of the goats, which comes as no surprise since she is best friends with Gracie! This sweet little girl is crazy energetic, she is always bouncing around. She is also quite mischevious... Her favorite game is "Escape The Pen", a game in which she and Gracie find new ways to get out of their pens and hang around outside the fence. You'd have to see it to believe it, but she's practically Houdini reincarnated! We love this sweet girl and we know you will too.

Cutie is the farm's second barn cat, Ally being the first. She came with the farm- which always shocks us due to how loving she is. She spends most of her time in the hayloft which seems to be her happy place. She tends to be on the shy side whenever away from the barn, but if she's inside her happy place she'll leap into your arms to be pat! She only likes being touched while in the barn. Everyone loves Cutie and her odd habits- we wouldn't have her any other way!
